Another pleasant surprise was discovering his knack for translating "techspeak" and explaining complex data science concepts in terms that non-technical audiences could understand. "I treated the job search like an enterprise sales process," Troy shares. Looking back, I‘m sure I came on a bit strong, but that hustle paid off."
His breakthrough moment came when a Flatiron alum referred him for a Stats Auditor role at the NBA. The position was a perfect fit for Troy‘s unique mix of skills and experience – it required a keen understanding of the game, sharp attention to detail, and the technical aptitude to wrangle large amounts of data.
To seal the deal, Troy went above and beyond in his interview preparation. He scoured the NBA‘s tech blog for insights into their data stack and priorities. And he put his sales presentation skills to work, developing a compelling narrative around his nontraditional background and demonstrating his value through the projects in his data science portfolio.
"My Flatiron capstone project ended up being a major talking point in the interview," Troy recalls. "I had built a machine learning model to predict the outcomes of NBA games based on factors like player stats, team rankings, and home court advantage. The model achieved 74% accuracy – significantly higher than domain expert benchmarks of 68%. The hiring manager loved how I approached the problem and was able to communicate key insights to improve predictive power."
After three grueling rounds of interviews, Troy got the call he had been dreaming of since his days as a sports-obsessed kid: he was officially a member of the NBA analytics team.

As an Associate Stats Auditor, Troy is responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of in-game statistics before they are distributed to media and league partners. This involves meticulous data validation and quality assurance – cross-checking stat feeds, play-by-play records, and score sheets to diagnose discrepancies.
The NBA captures an enormous amount of granular data about every game, from traditional box score stats to spatial tracking data that measures the coordinates of players and the ball 25 times per second. This wealth of information fuels advanced analytics for scouting reports, broadcaster insights, and the fan experience.
But collecting and storing that raw data is just the first step – it must be transformed, cleaned, and structured into usable formats for consumption by different groups. That‘s where Troy and his fellow Stats Auditors come in.
"So much of what I learned at Flatiron about data pipelines, ETL processes, and SQL database querying has been directly applicable to my day-to-day work," he explains. "I use Python to automate data quality checks and create data viz dashboards that flag potential errors for review. Attention to detail is crucial when you‘re dealing with stats that get reported to millions of fans in real-time."
One of the most rewarding aspects of the role for Troy has been supporting the NBA‘s Basketball Analytics team on special projects. He has contributed to building predictive models for identifying breakout players, optimizing in-arena fan promotions, and detecting anomalies in betting patterns that could signal integrity issues.
"It‘s so energizing to collaborate with some of the most brilliant analytical minds in sports," he beams. "Diving into research questions from different angles, experimenting with new techniques – that‘s where I feel like I‘m really living out my purpose and making an impact with data science."
Continuous Growth: What‘s Next for Troy
Looking back on his journey from sales rep to NBA analytics guru, Troy is most proud of the grit and perseverance it took to completely transform his skill set and career trajectory.
"Making a career change is never easy," he reflects. "There were plenty of long days and moments of self-doubt. But betting on myself and investing in learning data science has hands down been the best decision of my professional life. I wake up excited to solve problems with data and learn something new every day. That‘s an incredible feeling."
As he looks to the future, Troy is energized by the staggering potential for innovation at the intersection of sports and big data. The global sports analytics market is predicted to reach $3.4 billion by 2028, expanding at a 23.5% compound annual growth rate, per Emergen Research.
"I truly believe we‘re just scratching the surface of what‘s possible with machine learning and AI in sports," he explains. "In the next 5-10 years, I think we‘ll see data science play an even bigger role in optimizing athlete health and performance, automating officiating, and hyper-personalizing the fan experience. It‘s exciting to have a front row seat to that innovation and think about how I can contribute."
His advice for others considering a pivot into sports analytics?
"Develop a learning mindset and focus on building practical, relevant skills. A bootcamp like Flatiron is an amazing launchpad, but your education can‘t stop there. Follow industry leaders on social, listen to analytics podcasts, tackle sports data sets on Kaggle, attend conferences if you can. And don‘t underestimate the power of networking. This is a tight-knit but welcoming community – putting yourself out there and forming authentic relationships can open so many doors."
As for his own continuous learning journey, Troy‘s goals include deepening his expertise in Python data visualization libraries, mastering SQL stored procedures, and exploring applications of deep learning for sports betting.
"One of my favorite quotes is from Jacob Riis: ‘When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last blow that did it—but all that had gone before.‘
